How does a toilet flush valve work?
The toilet flush valve sits central at the bottom of your toilet cistern, and the push button operates it. The push button activates the valve, which lifts a rubber seal, releasing and allowing water to pass into the toilet bowl. Once the water has passed through, creating your flush, the seal sits back down, allowing the inlet valve to open up and refill the cistern.
A toilet syphon is a more traditional flushing arrangement operated by a cistern lever. A syphon acts like a plunger in that when you pull the toilet lever, the syphon draws up water through the diaphragm washer into the outlet, passing water through to the toilet pan for flushing. The syphon continues drawing water until the cistern empties, activating the inlet valve or ball cock for refilling the cistern.
