What is primer paint?
Primer paint is the first coat of paint you put on a material before painting. It will help seal and prepare untreated drywall or unfinished wood.
What does primer paint do?
Primer paint helps adhere paint to the surface. It helps provide a more durable paint job by providing additional protection to the surface material. White primer paint will help cover any dark stains from nicotine, water, oil or ink, so they don't show through your paint colour. It also neutralises any old colour so your new colour can shine through. As a result, you won't have to do as many paint layers.
How long after primer can I paint?
Each brand of paint primer gives you a different time between coats. For example, you will have to wait between 45 minutes and 4 hours, depending on the brand and material you're painting. Ensure you read the instructions carefully on the tub for a successful paint job.
What is the difference between primer and undercoat?
The words primer and undercoat often get used interchangeably. However, an undercoat is always a primer, but a primer is not always an undercoat. You can use a white primer instead of an undercoat for walls or wood surfaces. But if your primer is clear, you might want to add a white undercoat before painting your colour for a smooth, even finish.
Do I need two coats of paint if I use a primer?
Even if you use a primer, you will probably need to paint two coats of colour to get an even and uniform finish, especially if the colour you're painting on top of is different.
What is a paint sealer?
A paint sealer will make a porous surface, such as drywall or wood, non-porous. You can also use a sealer to smooth over and fix peeling wallpaper, paint or damaged drywall, mildew and knots so they don't come through the final colour. A paint sealer usually has an oil, resin or shellac base making our paint sealers waterproof.
