How to fit a bath waste into a new and old bath

If you’re plumbing in a new bath, you will eventually come to fit the bath waste. Or, if your old bath waste has corrosion or is leaking or damaged, you may find yourself in a situation where you need to replace it.

Fitting a bath waste into a new or freestanding bath is much easier than replacing an existing one, as new and freestanding baths have an easy access route underneath.

However, the replacement process for fitted baths is straightforward once you can access the underneath.

This guide will explain everything you need to know to fit a bath waste for a new bath and how to replace an old one, including what tools you need, how to fit a pop-up bath waste, and more.

What is a bath waste?

The bath waste is the component that drains the water from your bath to the wastewater pipe going to the outside drain.

A bath waste component has two sections; bath waste and overflow waste. The bath waste part connects the bath drain and waste trap, and the overflow waste funnels water away at the top of the bath when there is too much.

How to replace a bath waste

If you are replacing an old bath waste, the first thing you need to do is get access to underneath the bath. Then, you can start removing the old bath waste.

  1. First, use a screwdriver to unscrew the waste cover plate in the bathtub and remove it. Then remove the large washer.
  2. Next, remove the old overflow cover or rose and the overflow waste.
  3. Unscrew where the bath waste connects to the wastewater trap and remove any old sealant so the new bath waste can slot in and sit flat.
  4. Then, follow the steps below.

How to fit a bath waste into a new bath

If installing a new bath waste, follow our easy step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Choose your new bath waste

First, choose your new bath waste. Here at Build & Plumb, we have various styles and designs to browse. Why not browse our bath waste collection for modern and stylish baths?

Step 2: Prepare

If you have a new bath, peel back any masking cellophane where you’re working around the plug holes.

If you have a bath waste ready, lay out all the pieces from the box, ensuring you have all the necessary components and read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

Step 3: Attach the overflow pipe and waste

Locate the overflow pipe and the overflow waste and attach them with the washers and rings specified by the manufacturer to ensure a water-tight seal and tighten the nut. To ensure no water leaks, add some silicone seal or plumber’s gold to join them, to make the joint extra secure.

Step 4: Check the pipe length

You might find that the overflow pipe is too long. Measure the correct length between the overflow and bath waste plates. Ensure that the piping doesn’t stick up too high inside the waste and overflow plates, or it could develop mould and gunk and cause a blockage. Once you’ve determined the correct pipe length, cut the pipe to size with your pipe cutters.

Step 5: Locate and attach the sealing rings

Locate the sealing rings for the bath waste and overflow plates. Then, attach them to the bath drain and overflow hole opening with sealant or plumber’s gold and wipe any access with a wonder wipe. You can now fix the bath and overflow waste to the bath drain holes.

Step 6: Attach the bath waste

Locate the overflow rose and bath waste cover and attach them on the front of the bath to the bath waste using a screw and screwdriver.

To finish fitting the bath waste, you need to attach the bath waste to a waste trap and the wastewater pipe underneath the bath. You can either use push-fit pipes or solvent and solvent-weld pipes.
