Why should I point my patio paving with a jointing compound?

Laying down a patio is a great way to create a space in your garden to relax or entertain guests. Finishing your patio with a jointing compound is important to fill in any gaps between the pavers. Doing this will create a more visually appealing appearance, prevent the growth of unsightly weeds and protect the underlying bedding from insects and the weather, ensuring the pavers don’t become loose.

Considerations when using EASYJoint

If your paving is unlaid, it is important to consider your site conditions to ensure effective application. Your project’s ground conditions must be free-draining. If the area stays naturally wet and rarely dries out or has a high water table, then EASYJoint should not be used. EASYJoint cures gradually when in contact with air, so if the paving base never or rarely dries, nor will the bottom of the joints, resulting in joint failure.

For a project to be free-draining, the bedding and the sub-base must be porous. To achieve this, assuming a permeable sub-base, where a mortar bedding is used it should be no stronger than 6 part sharp sand to 1 part cement (6:1). This will ensure good drainage and is perfectly adequate for pedestrian areas.

What tools will I need to point a patio?

To point your patio, you will need:

  • EASYjoint jointing compound
  • A blade or scissors to open the bag
  • Soft broom or brush
  • Hose

How to use jointing compound: the EASYJoint way

  • Ensure the surfaces are clean and free from dirt or debris before beginning. It is also important to note that the width of the joints should be no less than 3mm, with a depth of at least 20mm, to achieve optimum results. When using on natural paving, pre-soak the area before applying EASYJoint.
  • To apply, cut open the bag and pour a generous amount onto the surface.

  • Working in small sections at a time to ensure an even finish, brush the compound into joints whilst wetting it to create a slurry. Ensure not to leave piles or focus on one spot for too long for even coverage.

TOP TIP: It is easier to do this step with two people. One to brush the compound and the other to spray water.

  • Use more compound to top up any low areas before it sets and repeat the process.

TOP TIP: In warmer weather, paving can dry quickly. Ensure paving is kept wet.

  • Apply a final gentle spray of water across the surface to wash off any EASYJoint residue to aid the final compaction process.
  • Leave the joint for approximately an hour. Use a pointing tool to strike at the joints for a smooth, professional finish if desired.
